Letter: O’Callaghan loaned a sympathetic ear

I am saddened by the sudden death of former Gov. Mike O'Callaghan. I am sure you will receive many letters praising him, but I must add my name to the list of people whose lives he touched.
I am not an important person by any stretch of the imagination, just an ordinary citizen and mother. Several years ago my child was abused by a trusted friend and babysitter. Our case languished in the court system for almost two years. We faced delay after delay, and I didn't know where to turn.
I had read several columns about child abuse that Mr. O'Callaghan had written. I was relatively new to Nevada and had no idea exactly who I was writing to; I was just desperate to settle this case and get some justice for my family. Shortly after I wrote, I received a phone call from Mr. O'Callaghan and he asked for the details of my case. The next thing I knew, the case went to court and was settled.
Our state, country and world could use a lot more people like Mike O'Callaghan. He will always have a special place in my heart.
Editor's note: The writer provided the Sun with her name, but in order to protect her child's identity, we withheld the mother's name.
