Letter: Diligence kept rural school alive

On June 7, 1976, the Nevada Supreme Court ordered the reopening of the school in Lund in White Pine County. Ten years later, in 1986, however, the School Board was looking at closing the school again. To save money, it was considering busing the 120 kindergarten-through-12th grade students 36 miles each way to Ely.

Mike O'Callaghan took time to listen, guide and direct us in how to keep the school open. He wrote editorials, had political cartoons developed and taught us how to work with the government.

He never forgot us! He spoke at graduation. He came to a community dinner honoring him. He got a greenhouse for our agriculture program and he provided a grant for a summer "hands-on" math class.

Without Mike, Lund would not have a school today. It's hard to say goodbye to a friend who always had time to listen.
