Students set for Science Olympiad

Twenty teams totaling 300 middle and high school students will compete in the state finals of the Science Olympiad from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in and around the Community College of Southern Nevada, 6375 W. Charleston Blvd.

Nevada's Science Olympiad combines a series of 30 competitions involving science activities to challenge middle and high school students from across the state.

The college's science faculty will judge most of the events with two teams emerging as winners.

The highest scoring middle school and high school teams will advance to the national competition in May in Pennsylvania. CCSN's Foundation is contributing $500 each to help get the science scholars to the nationals.

Rights of citizens, immigrants studied

Peter Erlinder, professor of constitutional law at the William Mitchell School of Law, will address the civil rights of immigrants and American citizens since the passing of the Patriot Act during a lecture Wednesday University of Nevada, Las Vegas' Boyd School of Law.

The event is scheduled from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Room 102 of the law school.

Food will be provided and everyone is welcome to attend.

Film to be shown on Jewish immigration

The Jewish Community Center's Yiddish group, Yiddishe Vinkle, will hold the next class at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road.

A film will be shown depicting the Jewish immigration experience of the Eastern European ancestors at the turn of the century.

Facilitated by educator Gina Klonoff, the class focuses not only on Yiddishe conversation and vocabulary, but also on the nostalgia, culture and way of life of the ancestors from Eastern Europe, and their transition to America.

Everyone from those who only understand "a bissel," to those who are fluent speakers is invited to join.

Rock climbing set for children

The Ultimate Saturday evening for children in grades K-6 begins at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Powerhouse Indoor Rock Climbing Center, 8201 W. Charleston Blvd., Suite B.

The Jewish Community Center will be sponsoring the rock climbing, a Havdallah service, arts and crafts, movies, and activities.

Powerhouse features a 9,000-square-foot area, 33 foot high ropes, special children's ABC area, and gymnastics foam padding floors.

Admission is $14 for JCC members and $20 for non-members.
