Letter: Children’s lives always a priority
Monday, March 8, 2004 | 9:01 a.m.
Just one of myriad examples of Gov. Mike O'Callaghan's compassion:
When I moved to Nevada in 1972, I found that the Clark County School District offered no programs for children with the multiple disabilities of deafness and visual impairment as was the case with my then-7-year-old son. For three years I tried in vain to get my child enrolled in school.
Finally, I wrote a letter that included excerpts from research, and mailed it to numerous persons of authority and also to the Las Vegas Sun. Several days later, to my amazement, an editorial supporting my cause appeared in the paper, followed by a call from Gov. Mike O'Callaghan's chief of staff, informing me that Gov. Mike was appointing a task force to get my son in school.
In the ensuing years, I could always count on Gov. Mike to support my efforts to improve the lives of children with disabilities. He was my personal hero.
