CARSON CITY -- The restoration and refurbishing of the historic Post Office in downtown Las Vegas is going to get $150,000 from the state.
The state Cultural Affairs Commission agreed Friday to distribute $1.9 million toward preserving and restoring 26 buildings throughout Nevada.
The Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services had asked for $390,000 for the work on the former federal building. The $150,000 was the largest grant given out.
The building opened in 1933 and is now on both the state and national historic registers. Plans call for turning it into a cultural center.
The cultural commission has allocated $187,565 to the courthouse renovation over the past two years.
The commission had requests for $7.5 million but had only $1.9 million to distribute. It was the last allocation from a $20 million bond issue that was disbursed over 10 years.
The commission also allocated $130,000 for the preservation of the Overton Gym and $22,000 to restore the Virgin-Moapa Maternity Hospital in Overton. The hospital was built in 1917 and has been vacant for 30 years.
