Letter: Income tax cut is fair, responsible
Wednesday, March 3, 2004 | 8:46 a.m.
Orville Goplen's Feb. 27 letter brought up a point that thousands of people (potential voters) cannot seem to understand. He stated that he and his wife are in the lower-middle-class income level and that they are retired and have no dependant children. I do not know their exact financial status, but his statement would indicate that they currently pay no income tax. If so, how is it possible that he would expect an income tax cut? It is simple -- the more income taxes you pay, the larger your income tax cut will be. That is only fair, reasonable and responsible.
Mr. Goplen states that he paid a higher Medicare tax. If he pays no income tax, he does not pay a Medicare tax. He may pay a higher premium for his Medicare supplement, but that is a voluntary insurance payment, not a tax.
Mr. Goplen use the word "rich" three times in his letter. I respectfully ask him to define the income level above which one is "rich."
I agree that President Bush has wasted money like a drunken Democrat. But one can only imagine how much bigger the deficit would be if a real Democrat were spending it!
