Fireplace heat sparks blaze
Wednesday, March 3, 2004 | 10:59 a.m.
Heat from a second-floor fireplace caused the attic of a home near Rainbow Boulevard and Hacienda Avenue to catch fire early this morning, Clark County fire department spokesman Bob Leinbach said.
Investigators said smoke alarms didn't sound until evacuation was under way because the fire was above the smoke alarms, Leinbach said.
One of the occupants woke up to a popping sound and fled from the house with two other adults.
The smoke alarms were triggered when the fire broke through the ceiling, Leinbach said. Fireplaces are not permitted on the second floors of homes.
The fire caused $150,000 in damage.
