Columnist Peter Benton: Volunteers sought for local LPGA event
Wednesday, March 3, 2004 | 10:03 a.m.
Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.
The success of every professional golf tournament is invariably predicated upon the services provided by its volunteers.
With that in mind, the LPGA Takefuji Classic, which is scheduled for April 12-17 at the Las Vegas Country Club, is requesting energetic people to volunteer their services for this $1.1 million event.
Kathy Williamson, volunteer co-ordinator, seeks volunteers to assist in all aspects of running the tournament, such as:
Television: To help the TV crews on the course by spotting balls for the camera personnel and assisting by carrying sound equipment. Days required are Thursday through Saturday.
Gallery control: Marshals are needed on each hole Wednesday through Saturday. The length of the assignment will be dependent upon the length of play each day.
Admission/will call: These volunteers will control the staff entrance gates, control ticket sales plus check incoming spectators for correct credentials. Days required will be Tuesday through Saturday.
Standard bearers: These folk, who will be needed Thursday and Friday, would walk with the professionals for 18 holes carrying a sign displaying the standings and names of their pro players. T-shirts will be provided.
Greens reporters: To relay scores provided by walking scorers to scoring control by radio and key pads. Required Thursday through Saturday.
Locker room: These volunteers, needed Sunday through Saturday, would provide hospitality for the LPGA players inside the locker rooms.
Course operations: Required for the whole week, (Sunday to Sunday) to distribute ice, fruit, beverages and extraneous supplies to scoring tents, tees and various other locations. Assist with the media room, course set-up and breakdown and must be able to lift at least 20 pounds.
Media center: To assist media representatives and members of the press with various, interesting duties. Would also be required in assisting to keep the scoreboard updated along with supervising the food and beverage. Needed Monday through Saturday.
There you have it, gang. If you would like to assist in any way whatsoever by contributing your time, please call Williamson at the Tournament Office, 898-4653.
I am of course alluding to the 12th annual Knights of Columbus outing which is scheduled for a 7 a.m. shotgun start on March 27 at the Boulder City Golf Club.
The $65 per player entry fee is an absolute steal, and if interested in participating, please call George Rakers at 293-0762.
"To be named in the top 100 Golf Shops is an accolade that validates the prestige and success of both courses, and the efforts of the entire staff," remarked Phil Green, president of O.B. Sports.
The golf shop merchandising for both Angel Park and We-Ko-Pa are spearheaded by O.B's director of retail, Kim Nelson.
