Message of optimism delivered in Las Vegas

Monday, March 1, 2004 | 11:11 a.m.

International Business Machines Corp. Chief Executive Sam Palmisano said in Las Vegas today that the global economy is improving this year, lifting sales of computers and software. The company also will spend $25 million to retrain some workers.

"People are beginning to invest again," Palmisano said in a speech at the company's PartnerWorld conference. "We are more optimistic going into '04 than we have been."

IBM, the world's largest computer maker, expects to benefit from increased corporate spending on computers, software and related services after a three-year drought. Technology spending will rise 6 percent to 7 percent this year and demand has improved since December, researcher IDC said last month.

IBM is offering some workers additional training if their jobs have been eliminated or moved to lower-cost countries such as India. The training will help employees get other jobs at IBM or at one of its 90,000 partners such as software makers SAP AG or PeopleSoft Inc., IBM said.
