Girls win one battle, continue crusade for ice cream

Wednesday, June 30, 2004 | 9:11 a.m.

WEIRTON, W.Va. -- Technically, the two 11-year-old crusaders have won: A new ice cream shop opened Friday in a town where others were pushed out by video poker bars.

But the coincidentally timely arrival of the 12th Street Parlor Cafe, which sits underneath a night club, isn't enough to satisfy Dazja Gianessi and Maya Carey. The soon-to-be sixth-graders say there are still too many gambling joints and too few places for kids.

They screamed for more ice cream Saturday, holding handmade signs up to passing motorists on Main Street and shouting, "Honk if you love ice cream!"

They got a lot of honks.

Passers-by stopped to sign a petition, while the mayor and a minister praised their determination.

Weirton, with a population of 20,000, has the highest concentration of video poker bars among West Virginia's 10 largest cities, with 81 licensed as of June 14.
