Redistricting next step for LV

Thursday, June 24, 2004 | 10:57 a.m.

With the Ward 2 special election done, the Las Vegas City Council may turn its attention to shifting the lines that separate the city's six council districts.

The move, if approved by the council, would even out the populations of the six wards, taking into account growth patterns in each area, Las Vegas City Manager Doug Selby said.

Redistricting was previously suggested by Councilman Michael Mack, whose Ward 6 has ballooned to almost 104,000 residents. Ward 1, by comparison, is home to only 79,000, Selby said. Council members delayed the vote until results from the Ward 2 election came through.

The effort would establish a benchmark of between 82,000 and 85,000 residents per ward, he said, with up to a 5 percent different between the wards. Fast-growing districts, including Ward 6, would purposely be set lower to prevent them from outpacing other areas.

The city may use retired judge Fred Kessler, who helped council members in 2002 redraw the district lines, Selby said.

The council is required to reach an agreement by October before candidates begin filing for elections in 2005, he said.
