Henderson man out of Race Across America
Henderson firefighter Scott Dakus was forced to withdraw today from the Insight Race Across America because of a knee problem.
Dakus, competing for the first time in the coast-to-coast bicycle race, checked in this morning at Pie Town, N.M., still in 15th place. He was within 34 minutes of 14th-place Andrew Lapkass of Breckenridge, Colo., but had to quit before reaching the next time station in Socorro, N.M.
Dakus and 18 other riders in the men's solo division set out Sunday in San Diego on the 2,958-mile cycling race to the Boardwalk in Atlantic City.
At the head of the pack, 2003 runner-up Jure Robic of Slovenia remained in the lead but his advantage over RAAM rookie Michael Trevino of San Diego had dwindled to about 90 minutes.
Dakus was the second men's solo competitor forced out of the race in the past 24 hours. Overnight, Russ Goodwin of Sierra Vista, Ariz., was struck by his support vehicle. He was uninjured, but reportedly after an argument with members of his support team, the crew abandoned Goodwin and left the scene. It is illegal to ride at night without a support vehicle, so Goodwin was disqualified.
Arizona, Miami ousted
Michael Hyle pitched six shutout innings, and Marshall Szabo had three hits -- including a triple and a double -- as Georgia eliminated Arizona from the College World Series with a 3-1 victory Tuesday. The Bulldogs (45-22) advanced to the Bracket One final against Texas.
Bryan Triplett had four hits, and Nick Gardiner and Brendan Winn drove in three runs each as South Carolina eliminated Miami. The Gamecocks (51-16) play today against Cal State Fullerton.
Moe has heart attack
Doug Moe, the winningest coach in Denver Nuggets history, is recovering at home in Texas following a heart attack last week, a team spokesman said Tuesday.
BCS changes on hold
The Bowl Championship Series is still crunching numbers for its new formula to determine which teams will play for the national championship. The BCS had considered unveiling its new math this week.
