Safety fair planned Saturday for seniors

Adults 55 and older are invited to attend a free safety fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Desert Breeze Park, Spring Mountain Road and Durango Drive.

For protection against night time vehicle theft, participants will have an opportunity to register in the "Watch Your Car" program, a national program geared towards people who don't drive their vehicles between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Distinctive stickers identify participants' vehicles and allow police to stop those vehicles to determine if they have been stolen. Decals are free of charge once a brief application has been completed.

To avoid identity theft from thieves who go through trash cans and garbage cans in an attempt to get personal information such as credit card numbers and social security numbers, Shred-It Corp. will shred all personal information brought to the sight. There is no limit to the amount shredded. Call 455-8264.

Classes scheduled for baby sitters

University Medical Center will offer free safe sitter classes to children from 11 to 13, teaching would-be baby sitters how to handle emergencies when caring for children.

The classes will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday; July 8 and 9; July 20 and 21; and Aug. 5 and 6 at the Family Resource Center at UMC, 1120 Shadow Lane.

The two-day program covers basic child care, how to call for emergency help, first aid, safety, and baby-sitting business skills. A certificate is given to participants upon successful completion of the Safe Sitter program.

The Safe Sitter certificate lets parents know the baby sitter has the knowledge and skills to watch their children.

Many young adolescents across the country have been trained by Safe Sitter to handle life-threatening emergencies. All information is medically accurate and is taught by trained Safe Sitter instructors. Participants get hands-on practice in basic life-saving techniques so they are prepared to act in a crisis.

Call 383-2229 for more information or to register.
