Catherine Kay May

Catherine Kay May, 67, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in Las Vegas. She was born Nov. 25, 1936, in Cumberland, Md., to parents Raymond and Katie Reissig. Her childhood was rich in love, education and the arts. She studied the piano, violin and had singing lessons. A graduate of St. Patrick's Catholic High School in 1954, Catherine then attended business school in Maryland, then moved on to government work in Washington, D.C.

At age 18, she married husband Jerry May after a two-week courtship, moved to Las Vegas in 1955, and eventually became a mother of five. First-born son Raymond arrived the day the Fremont hotel-casino opened in 1956.

From 1968 to 1973, while her children attended St. Christopher's Catholic School, she volunteered at the school, running the hot lunch program. She never minded driving them across town because it was important to her that they attend a school that was not segregated, wanting them to grow up with diversity, understanding all races, religions and cultures.

Catherine was confined to a wheelchair in 1980 because of several types of arthritis, and in 1985 became a breast cancer survivor.

When her husband, Jerry, was incarcerated in 1984, she picked up the reins of the last small account of his advertising agency, which had been the largest in the state. She built that small account into a profitable venture, which not only supported her and her children, but also paid off debts incurred during his trial. While Jerry was away, she faithfully drove 360 miles round trip to Boron, Calif., to visit him every weekend, though not having driven for more than five years. She would arrive at 4 a.m. so she would be the first in line. She quickly became friends with the other wives and families, making even such a dismal place seem brighter. Catherine's graceful poise sustained her while she was up as well as when she was down, earning the respect of all who knew her.

She made lasting friendships in every stage of her life, incorporating all social classes. During her career in the political scene, she was able to apply her talents in "rallying the troops" to get them to the voting booths. She employed the homeless, giving them a sense of value and something to feel good about themselves, believing their small part really makes a difference in the world.

Most of all, Catherine May's footprints leave behind a symbol of love, faith, strength, dignity, honor, intelligence, and a great sense of humor. She was a model for us all of commitment to family, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, 'til death do us part.

" 'We love you and miss you dearly,' 'Honey,' 'Mom,' 'Catherine' and 'Mom-Moms,' 'we will ... see you later!' "

Catherine and her husband Jerry were active in the local bridge-playing community. Catherine was a former secretary and unit game coordinator of the Las Vegas unit of the American Contract Bridge League.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry; two sons, Raymond May of El Paso, Texas, and Justin Nevada May of Las Vegas; three daughters, Catherine Gold and Mary May, both of Las Vegas, and Angela Zubick of Gulfport, Miss.; one brother, Vincent E. McIntosh of Irmo, S.C.; one sister, Isabelle Berklas of Las Vegas; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be 10:40 a.m. Wednesday in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City. A reception will be 5 p.m. Wednesday at the home of Sandra and Howard Tuft. Call 873-9635 for information or directions. Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North, has assisted with arrangements.
