UNLV's Nielsen nabs All-American honors

Former UNLV right fielder Eric Nielsen was honored by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assocation on its 14th annual All-America Division I baseball teams.

Nielsen, the only Mountain West Conference selection on any of the three teams announced by the NCBWA, was named to the third team. Earlier this month, Nielsen was named to the first team of the Louisville Slugger All-America team as selected by Collegiate Baseball.

Frohlich camp slated

Former UNLV All-American and Sun guest columnist Linda Frohlich will be conducting a five-day camp beginning Monday at Christ the King Church, 4925 S. Torrey Pines (just south of Tropicana between Jones and Rainbows). The camp is open to boys and girls ages 6-15. Log onto the trifyttsports.com Web site for more information.

Serena draws top seed

Serena and Venus Williams received a break from the All England Club when they were seeded way above their current rankings. Two-time defending champion Serena, ranked No. 10, was given the top seeding. Former two-time winner Venus, ranked eighth, was seeded No. 3. Meanwhile, nine-time champion Martina Navratilova said she has accepted a wild card to play singles at Wimbledon for the first time in 10 years.

AFL honors Nash

Gladiators offensive specialist Marcus Nash was named the Arena Football League's offensive player of the year for 2004. In his first season in Las Vegas, Nash broke the AFL mark for receiptions in a season with 154.

Elliott gets new agent

Smarty Jones' jockey Stewart Elliott has a new agent. Elliott fired Ray Lopez and hired Joe Rosen on Wednesday, saying "it was time for a change.

Irbe traded to Jackets

Arturs Irbe was traded by the Carolina Hurricanes to the Columbus Blue Jackets, ending a six-year stint with the team.
