Man, 68, on scooter hit by car
Wednesday, June 16, 2004 | 9:44 a.m.
A 68-year-old Las Vegas man was in critical condition this morning after he was struck by a car while riding a motorized scooter on Bonanza Road near D Street.
Larry Streit was driving a 2003 Tank Scooter southbound on D Street around 2:30 p.m. when he stopped at a red traffic light and then turned right onto Bonanza Road, according to Sgt. Frank Weigand of Metro's Fatal Accident Investigation Detail.
Streit was supposed to stay in the right hand lane, but instead drove diagonally into the left travel lane, crossing the path of a 2001 Daewoo driven by 81-year-old James Pomeroy of Las Vegas, Weigand said.
The Daewoo struck the Tank Scooter, throwing Streit onto the windshield of the car, Weigand said. Streit knocked his head against the windshield and was carried by the vehicle for 15 feet, he said.
Moments later the Daewoo came to a stop, at which point Streit was tossed from the windshield. The man slid 35 feet on the street, Weigand said.
Although the collision remains under investigation, Weigand said he believes Streit is at fault for making "an unsafe turn movement."
