Letter: Blame Democrats for 1980s deficits
Wednesday, June 16, 2004 | 9:16 a.m.
This past week, the old complaint that Ronald Reagan caused the national debt to rise during the 1980s showed up yet again. Well, at least one Democrat knows the truth.
Back in 2000, while campaigning against Al Gore in the Democratic primaries, former New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley said that if every Democrat had voted as he did for the budget cuts requested by Reagan, there would have been no deficits.
The policies of Ronald Reagan produced 96 straight months of economic growth and a doubling of tax revenue during his administration. The fact that the Democrats controlling both houses of Congress at the time couldn't show fiscal restraint was beyond his control.
