Letter: Pedestrians, bike riders don’t feel safe in Las Vegas

Friday, June 11, 2004 | 9:23 a.m.

I read your story headlined "Moving Targets" in the paper on June 6.

For months, I've been concerned about all the pedestrians and cyclists who are being injured and killed in Las Vegas. I am an Australian and have lived in Las Vegas since July 2003. Since that time I have had a few close calls while trying to cross roads. I mostly walk or take the bus. I never feel safe walking about these streets.

Just a couple of weeks ago, on the corner of Spencer and Reno streets, a car slowed down at the crossing with a stop sign there for the driver. I proceeded to walk as the driver had slowed down, but for some strange reason, just before I reached halfway across the road, the driver sped up and did not wait for me to finish crossing, even though I was walking quickly. I was stunned! And, I am not one of those pedestrians who the media says are walking around drunk or casually jaywalking.

Maybe tougher and higher fines, more driver education, a change in laws and some speed cameras would help curb this pervasive problem.
