Letter: Courtesy needed on Nevada roads
Friday, June 11, 2004 | 9:24 a.m.
My heart goes out to all the families who have lost loved ones after being hit by a car. Currently the lame motor vehicle laws are protecting nobody but motorists who kill and maim pedestrians. It seems the odds are stacked for drivers who are protected by disc brakes, 5,000 pounds of steel and Nevada's archaic motor vehicle code.
Nevada lawmakers have to get busy and adopt "courtesy laws." In short, both lanes must stop whenever someone steps into the street and a motorist must wait until the pedestrian steps up on the curb, regardless whether they are on a crosswalk or not. A little courtesy goes a long way and who knows, it just might save a few lives.
