Four selected for Hockey Hall of Fame

Ray Bourque, Paul Coffey and Larry Murphy were elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility. Former Calgary and Toronto general manager Cliff Fletcher was chosen for induction in the builders' category by the 18-member selection committee.

Bourque, who played 22 NHL seasons, holds career records for defensemen in goals (410), assists (1,169) and points (1,579). Coffey is second to Bourque in goals (396), assists (1,135) and points (1,531) by a defenseman.

Murphy is second in games played by a defenseman (1,615) and fifth in points (1,216).

Fletcher helped build the Calgary team that won the Stanley Cup in 1989 and turned the Maple Leafs into contenders in the early 1990s.

JAMES NORRIS TROPHY (Defenseman) -- Zdeno Chara, Ottawa; Chris Pronger, St. Louis; Scott Niedermayer, New Jersey.

FRANK J. SELKE TROPHY (Defensive forward) -- John Madden, New Jersey; Kris Draper, Detroit; Alyn McCauley, San Jose.

JACK ADAMS AWARD (Coach) -- John Tortorella, Tampa Bay; Ron Wilson, San Jose; Darryl Sutter, Calgary.

LADY BYNG TROPHY (Sportsmanship) -- Martin St. Louis, Tampa Bay; Daniel Alfredsson, Ottawa; Brad Richards, Tampa Bay.

Scoring system OK'd

A new scoring system for figure skating was approved after the Olympic pairs scandal forced the sport's governing body to make radical changes.

The International Skating Union's new system replaces the famed 6.0 score and is based on points for jumps, spins, footwork and artistic elements.

Kite makes U.S. Open

Former U.S. Open champion Tom Kite shot a 71 in the rain-delayed sectional qualifier at Shadow Hawk Golf Club in Richmond, Texas, giving him his 31st consecutive trip to the U.S. Open.

Morrill signs new deal

Utah State basketball coach Stew Morrill, whose teams have posted five straight 20-win seasons, has signed an eight-year contract

In his six years at USU, the Aggies have had five of their top seven seasons in school history, and have won three of the last five Big West Conference regular season championships.

McPherson wins honor

Adrian McPherson of the Indiana Firebirds, who set an Arena Football League record for rushing touchdowns in a season, was selected Wednesday as rookie of the year.
