2004 Sun All-State Softball Team
Thursday, June 10, 2004 | 10:06 a.m.
SHANNON CRISP
P, Sr., Centennial
Noteworthy: From start to finish in 2004, undoubtedly the best softball player in Nevada ... after two one-run losses in 2002 and 2003 state title games, led Centennial to an improbably 4A state tournament comeback and a championship ... at the plate, batted .490 with six homers and 35 in regular season ... hit four more homers on final day of state playoffs alone ... went 22-3 as a pitcher with a 0.47 ERA and 304 strikeouts ... voted most valuable pitcher in the Sunset Region ... a three-time All-State first team choice ... "I don't see anyone in the near future who can do what she did," Bulldogs coach Mike Livreri said.
LINDSEY CALLAWAY
P, So., Palo Verde
Noteworthy: The youngest member of this year's All-State first team, Callaway pitched the Panthers into the Sunset Region title game and proved to be one of the toughest hurlers in the state ... battled for nine innings before losing to Centennial in region championship and impressive playoff showing boosted her All-State hopes ... the lone pitcher for Palo Verde, Callaway logged 161 innings in the regular season, putting up an ERA of 0.95 ... finished 17-7 with 181 strikeouts, impressive in the difficult Northwest Division and Sunset Region.
KELLY GRIEGO
P/1B, Jr., Silverado
Noteworthy: Skyhawks coach Steve Hodges said late in the season that the team improved as Griego improved -- she led them to the state playoffs ... equally solid both in the circle, on the field and at the plate ... allowed one earned run in four region playoff games to help Silverado win another championship ... a 15-10 record and 1.73 ERA, which took a hit during flu-hampered state playoff games ... struck out 143 batters ... also led Silverado with a .441 batting average, .485 on-base percentage, four homers and 30 RBIs ... "Kelly will be one of the three best players in southern Nevada next year," Hodges said.
KIM ADAMS
P, Sr., Cimarron-Memorial
Noteworthy: Back-to-back seasons of good showings for one of the Spartans' senior leaders ... first-team All-Sunset Region selection ... helped the Spartans into the Sunset Region playoffs again ... despite reduced innings in the circle, Adams still posted stellar numbers ... in 69 innings, compiled an 8-4 record with a 1.01 ERA ... still struck out 80 batters as well ... batted .471 (32-for-68) in the regular season ... drove in 30 runs and hit a pair of homers.
AMY GLEICHER
C/3B, Sr., Durango
Noteworthy: Although the Blazers did not last in the Sunset Region playoffs, Gleicher still stood out as one of southern Nevada's best players, and definitely its best catcher ... started the season behind the plate, then moved to third to help stabilize Durango's infield defense ... led the Valley with a .544 batting average, including a .667 average with runners in scoring position ... scored 30 runs and hit 11 doubles and five triples ... also hit two homers ... "I've never had a senior that's had an offensive year like she had," Blazers coach Sandy Morgan said. "She has been amazing, and just so consistent."
DANIELLE MARTINEZ
IF, Sr., Sierra Vista
Noteworthy: The anchor of a talented Sierra Vista squad, Martinez carried the Lions into the Sunset Region playoffs ... her outstanding defense at shortstop ranked with that of any infielder in the state ... also strong at the plate ... voted the most valuable player in the Sunset Region by coaches ... received multiple All-Sunset Region awards while at Sierra Vista, and also earned honors as team defensive player of the year ... signed to play college softball locally at UNLV.
JESSICA HAIGHT
IF/P, Jr., McQueen
Noteworthy: Co-captain of the Lancers' squad led her team to the final day of the 4A state tournament and a first-round victory over Centennial ... split time playing first base and pitching for McQueen ... in the circle, built an 8-2 record ... at the plate is where her real damage came, hitting .425 with 14 extra-base hits ... hit four homers and drove in 32 runs, and also scored 24 times ... a solid .986 fielding percentage ... "She's a great leader because she knows how to lead," Lancers coach Stacey Allinson said. "She knows how to address her peers to get them motivated."
TORY HEALY
IF, Sr., Centennial
Noteworthy: A study in grit and persistence, fighting through injury all year to help the Bulldogs to their first 4A state softball championship ... spent most of the year as a designated hitter before finishing up at second base, where she could handle short throws with her bad shoulder ... a .520 batting average that ranked second only to Gleicher ... led the Valley in the regular season with seven homers and 38 RBIs ... signed to play college ball at Niagara ... "She has a pretty sweet bat," Livreri said. "She's clutch. She's a good player all-around."
KAYCEE WILCKS
OF, Sr., Douglas
Noteworthy: Arguably the best outfielder in the state ... selected to first-team All-Sierra League squad and a two-time All-State pick ... effective at the top of the Tigers' order, batting .391 ... scored 55 runs and totaled 63 hits ... excellent speed led to perfect mark stealing bases, going 20-for-20 on the season ... most impressively, went 5-for-7 against Shannon Crisp in two games at state tournament ... did not make an error this year ... a UNR signee ... "About half of the times she got on base, she scored," Tigers coach Todd Wilcks said. "She was also a big key to our success."
LAURA SCARSELLI
OF, Sr., McQueen
Noteworthy: Scarselli's great season went beyond the numbers for McQueen ... the lone senior on Lancers' squad, she missed the first two weeks of the season before coming back to patrol center field ... totaled 11 extra-base hits to help her to a .350 batting average ... scored 19 runs and drove in 17 runs, but made her biggest contributions in the playoffs ... three-run triple against Shannon Crisp allowed McQueen to beat Centennial in the opening round of the state playoffs ... "She was a great leader by example," Lancers coach Stacey Allinson said. "She always worked hard and was very motivating."
BRITTANY PUZEY
OF/P, Jr., Douglas
Noteworthy: Versatile athlete who split time in the circle and in the left field for 4A state runner-up Tigers ... Sierra Region Player of the Year ... compiled a 17-3 record in 130 innings, striking out 157 with an ERA of 0.91 ... allowed just 77 hits and 17 earned runs ... also a force at the plate for Douglas, hitting .486 (71-for-146) ... smacked nine homers and drove in 52 runs ... Tigers coach Todd Wilcks calls her "a real competitor" ... "She was one of the kids that just did a phenomenal job all year," Wilcks said. "She had some really key hits that won some big games for us."
Extensive input from baseball and softball coaches and various media sources throughout the state was used to select the All-State teams, which weigh in playoff performance while still evaluating the entire season. Coaches and media members are asked to select the best players at some fixed positions and are also allowed to vote for at-large slots for players at any position.
