The number of people seeking applications for a program that helps poor people pay their utility bills has tripled since advertising began last week, Linda Mercer, energy assistance program manager of the Nevada Welfare Division, said.
The program was created by a bill passed in the 2001 Legislature but has been largely unknown until now, Mercer said. Since a television and radio campaign began last week, the number of people seeking applications has gone from an average of 40 a day to 120 a day, she said.
Residents seeking information about eligibility may call the toll-free number: (866) 846-2009.
