Letter: Writer’s words impede readers

Tuesday, June 8, 2004 | 10:12 a.m.

In his May 30 column, Ralston wrote of "entropic results," and "the propinquity of the mayoral ethics cloud" and "a dozen tabula rasas." Rather than serving to enhance the ease of understanding and enjoyment of learning, the use of this language most likely only served to frustrate most of Ralston's readers. An effective writer needs to communicate in a manner that is familiar and comfortable for most of the writer's expected readers.

I encourage Mr. Ralston to abandon the use of all ambitious language. His readers will be well served only when he causes them to continuously reach new levels of knowledge rather than to continuously reach for a dictionary.
