Letter: Nobody entitled to drive through wilderness areas

Tuesday, June 8, 2004 | 10:12 a.m.

His sense of entitlement apparently does not require him to justify degrading a true wilderness experience for all other users, from hunters to photographers to amateur naturalists, from those seeking quiet or to commune with their God or to those simply enjoying an unspoiled landscape. Nor does Mr. Phillips feel the need to defend scarring the land, damaging the soil and biological structures, or introducing exotic weeds throughout his travels, nor the resultant costs to the taxpayers in reduced productivity of the land and increased wildfire frequency.

Mr. Phillips would also deny a true wilderness experience, which he has had available for 50 years, to all future generations simply because he feels he is entitled. I wonder if Mr. Phillips is simply unaware of the conflicts with other users and the damage he creates, or if he just doesn't care.
