Teen third in Holocaust contest
A Henderson teenager has been chosen one of 13 winners nationwide in the Holocaust Memorial Museum's May Family Art and Writing Contest.
Sheila Toy Brown, a senior at Coronado High School, was selected for third place in the high school and art division of the contest.
Five written entries, seven art entries and one media entry were awarded prizes by the judging committee, which consisted of historians, educators, artists, writers and Holocaust survivors. More than 2,800 students from 48 states and two military bases competed in this year's contest.
Students were asked to identify the challenges hidden children, parents or rescuers faced during the Holocaust and how they would respond to those challenges.
Brown received a $125 cash gift and a $50 gift certificate to the Holocaust Museum. Brown also received a selection of Holocaust-related books to contribute to her classroom.
