UNLV's Moore shoots 67 at NCAA tournament
UNLV's Ryan Moore shot a 3-under par 67 and sits just two strokes off the lead after the first round of play Tuesday at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship in Hot Springs, Va.
Moore was one of just 19 golfers in the 154-player field to shoot under par at the par-70, 6,679-yard Cascades Course at the Homestead Resort. Moore carded five birdies on the day, including three on his last five holes.
California's Jeff Hood shot 65 to grab the first-round lead. The Golden Bears shot 279 as a team to lead BYU (280) and TCU (281).
Fox hired at UNR
Mark Fox was hired as Nevada-Reno's basketball coach after working four years as an assistant under Trent Johnson.
Johnson, who led UNR to a 25-9 season and its first appearance in the NCAA tournament's round of 16, resigned a week ago to coach Stanford.
Fox has been a Division I assistant for 11 years at UNR, Kansas State and Washington.
Valenzuela sidelined
Patrick Valenzuela lost his bid to ride Rock Hard Ten in the Belmont Stakes, denied by a judge who refused to postpone his suspension for failing to take a drug test. The suspension by the California Horse Racing Board prevents him from riding in North America until July 1.
Wimmer found guilty
NASCAR driver Scott Allan Wimmer was sentenced to a year's probation and 24 hours of community service after being convicted of drunken driving and fleeing the scene of an accident.
Wimmer received a 60-day suspended prison term Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C, served only if he violates probation. Should he violate probation, he also would lose his driver's license for a year. He already has undergone an alcohol assessment, satisfying the last term of the sentence.
The multimillion-dollar lawsuit filed by the Chicago-based National Jockey Club alleged that Ganassi failed to adequately fund the project and was trying to duck his share of the debt, according to a statement from the club.
Anderson joins Yanks
Right-hander Jason Anderson rejoined the New York Yankees' organization when he was claimed off waivers from Cleveland.
The Yankees optioned Anderson to Triple-A Columbus and designated catcher David Parrish for assignment.
Chavez ranks second in the American League with 13 home runs and is hitting .249 with 34 RBIs for the Athletics this season.
