Letter: U.S. efforts in Iraq justified
Wednesday, June 2, 2004 | 9:06 a.m.
Letter writer Richard Mundy claims that Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, is correct in questioning the competence of President Bush because "she sees that the reasons that the Bush administration gave for going to war -- weapons of mass destruction, Saddam's nuclear weapons program, and his ties to al-Qaida -- have all turned out to be false."
They are not false. Pelosi and the rabid Bush haters prefer to play politics with national security and deny reality. To them, political power is paramount.
Prior to the war, nearly every government on Earth believed that there were WMD in Iraq. Democrats, including Pelosi, supported President Clinton's bombing of Iraq to take out WMD. Prior to the war, even the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee agreed that Saddam had WMD.
There is ample evidence that Saddam was trying to develop nuclear weapons. Recent reports tie his efforts to the now dismantled program in Libya. The Wall Street Journal recently reported new links being established between Iraq and 9-11. This is in addition to the past links, such as the Salmon Pak training area.
The war in Iraq was, and remains, justified. Terrorists want to destroy our country and Saddam was supporting them. We are safer today than we were prior to the Iraqi invasion.
I am a veteran who supports President Bush.
