Fishing report: Seems it’s just too hot to spend time fishing

NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE

There has been a noticeable lack of anglers at the lake in recent days, likely because the hot weather has been keeping them indoors near their air conditioners.

The few who have tried their luck during the past week have, for the most part, had only limited success. Such success has been coming from the Boulder Basin where boaters have caught striped bass that weigh up to 3 pounds around Hemenway Harbor and Vegas Bay. Small stripers that weigh under a pound are still being taken around the 33 Hole.

Last Thursday, a happy angler showed National Park Service employees a 42-pound striper that he caught at the tires at Echo Bay Marina.

Nevada Department of Wildlife creel census clerks checked anglers who had caught 16 bass Sunday near Echo. Three stripers were seen as well that were caught near the islands in front of Echo Bay.

The best action is now being found for channel catfish and anglers are catching the fish in coves throughout the lake. Catfish are taking anchovies and shrimp.

LAKE MOHAVE: The big news coming from the lake was a 50-pound striped bass that was caught early Sunday morning by a boater between Willow Beach and mile marker 52. Ben Grande of Las Vegas said he caught the fish with a large trout imitation lure and delivered it to a taxidermy shop where it was weighed and measured at 46 inches in length.

The rainbow trout plant Last Friday attracted approximately 40 anglers and all managed to catch fish. A game warden with the Arizona Game and Fish Department cited several people that day for exceeding their limit of 10 trout.

Striped bass fishing continues to be fair for boaters who have been drifting bait in the narrows above Cottonwood Cove. Most of the stripers in that area weigh about a pound.

WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: Anglers continued to experience some success for rainbow trout on both Cold Springs and Haymeadow reservoirs. A few trout that measured 17 inches were taken with PowerBait. A few largemouth bass were also taken with rubber worms.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR: Fishing continued to be good for stocked rainbow trout that averaged 11 inches. Shore anglers using night crawlers and PowerBait were more successful during the early mornings and evenings.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR: Despite low water levels, anglers continued to take a few rainbow and brown trout. The fish averaged 11 inches. PowerBait seemed to be the bait of choice.

URBAN PARK PONDS: Angler success dropped slightly from the previous week, but catfish were still being taken from Floyd Lamb State Park, Lorenzi Park, Sunset Park and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City. An assortment of baits were used to take the fish.
