OUTSTANDING PLAYERS

Open Division: Greg Oden.

A Division: Kechan Myers.

B Division: Jack Martin.

C Division: Ike Okoye.

High School Division: Michael Sanchez.

Six local teams entered pool play last week in the Reebok Big Time tournament. Only one advanced deep into the bracket, as the Basic Wolves fell to eventual High School Division champion Arkansas Hawks 15s 74-57 Monday morning.

In some past years, teams have been loaded with all the local talent. That was not the case this year. With two schools sending kids exclusively to high school division teams, the open division was left without any dominant names.

Some of the teams have been together for a long time, but regardless, for many of the players and coaches involved, having the talent spread out across several teams is probably not such a bad thing, even if it means teams don't make it into the weekend's bracket play.

"There was some talent spread out," Southern Nevada All-Stars coach Bill Giguere said. "We've got some players that might be underrated, so it's nice they got a shot, a chance to be seen."

Nate Schulte, last year's Las Vegas Sun player of the year, said that having all the best players on one team is just asking for trouble.

"If you get enough stars on the same team, they'll all want to shoot it," he said.

Coach Neal Marek, whose Chinese Chickens were eliminated from the high school division early Saturday, said that generally, the stars do stick with a few select teams, even this year when the talent was more diluted.

"The strongest teams in Las Vegas are generally the Southern Nevada All-Stars and the Las Vegas Prospects, they tend to have some seniors and good juniors," he said. "Basketball's a game where five guys play, and it's hard to have a real large team, so it's better to give everyone an opportunity to play. That's the same as with other schools -- players that come out of L.A. or Houston, you'll see a few teams coming out of there that give everyone the opportunity to play."
