Federal team to assess Carson City fire damage

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY -- A federal team is due in Carson City on Wednesday to assess the damage of the 8,723-acre forest and range fire and to determine if the state will qualify for federal aid.

Gov. Kenny Guinn said he asked for the federal preliminary damage assessment team because the blaze earlier this month "caused significant destruction of private and commercial properties, roadways and drainage infrastructure."

The team will determine if the state qualifies for a federal presidential declaration of emergency that would make it eligible for federal grants for the costs of the emergency response and the restoration of lost or damaged public infrastructure. The state also could receive funds to help with rehabilitation of the affected areas.

The preliminary estimate for the damage caused by the fire is $5.6 million. The blaze destroyed 15 homes, 25 other buildings such as barns and storage sheds, one business and eight vehicles.
