WASHINGTON -- The judge overseeing the federal government's massive lawsuit against the tobacco industry levied a fine of $2.75 million Wednesday against Philip Morris USA and its parent company, the Altria Group, for destroying more than two years' worth of e-mail messages relevant to the case.
Philip Morris, the country's biggest cigarette manufacturer, described the fine as "a harsh penalty" and said it would study its legal options.
