UNLV adding four to Hall of Fame

Three former UNLV standouts and a longtime Rebels head coach have been voted into the school's Hall of Fame.

Warren Schutte (1989-93), UNLV's first first-team golf All-American; wide receiver Keenan McCardell (1987-90), the first and only Rebel to score in a Super Bowl while helpingTampa Bay win the 2002 title; and Las Vegas High graduate Freddie Banks (1983-87), who connected on an NCAA tournament record 10 3-pointers against Indiana in the 1987 Final Four, were the players chosen.

Joining them will be Fred Dallimore (1974-96), who coached UNLV's baseball program for 23 seasons and ranks 31st on the NCAA all-time victories list with a 794-558-2 (.587) mark. Dallimore coached 11 All-Americans.

The class will be inducted at ceremonies early next year on a date to be determined.

Brothers lead divers

Brothers Justin and Troy Dumais led the qualifiers in the men's 3-meter synchronized diving preliminaries at the U.S. National Diving Championships in Mission Viejo, Calif. The team of Mark Carlton and Brian Mariano was second. Cassandra Cardinell and Sara Hilderbrand topped the qualifiers in women's synchronized diving.

Kings get Ostertag

Center Greg Ostertag signed with the Sacramento Kings after nine seasons with the Utah Jazz. He is expected to fill the backup role vacated by Vlade Divac, who signed with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Venus on a roll

Venus Williams overwhelmed Ashley Harkleroad 6-2, 6-1 in the second round of the JPMorgan Chase Open at Carson, Calif.

Eyes on Wrigley

Wrigley Field in Chicago must undergo a city-ordered structural inspection after a fist-sized piece of concrete fell from the upper deck after a Cubs game last week and landed next to a 5-year-old boy.

George has a list

The agent for free agent running back Eddie George confirmed that his client, who was released this week by the Tennessee Titans, is hoping to sign with the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles or Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Argentina in final

Argentina defeated Colombia 3-0 in their Copa America semifinal match at Lima, Peru, and will play Sunday against the winner of today's Brazil-Uruguay match.

Halpern will stay

The Washington Capitals re-signed center Jeff Halpern, their leading scorer last season.
