Metro officer involved in shooting

Monday, July 19, 2004 | 11:14 a.m.

A Metro Police officer shot a man Saturday afternoon during a confrontation at an apartment complex on South Maryland Parkway.

The officer shot 27-year-old Robert Walker in the arm and leg after several attempts to subdue him using other means, including a Taser stun gun, pepper spray and a bean-bag gun, police said.

Walker was treated at University Medical Center and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of attempted robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and resisting police with a weapon, police said.

Police responded to the Casa Tiempo apartment complex at 2850 South Maryland Parkway near Sahara Avenue around noon after a woman reported that a man had tried to carjack her vehicle.

The woman pointed out Walker, who was walking around the parking lot when officers arrived, police said. When approached by an officer, Walker "became unruly" and walked toward the apartments.

The officer suspected Walker was under the influence of drugs and followed him, police said. Fearing the safety of the residents nearby, the officer shot Walker with a Taser stun gun, but it was ineffective, police said.

Officers tried again several times to subdue Walker, but failed, police said. Walker was followed into an apartment and charged the officers when confronted.

One of the officers fired two shots at Walker, hitting him in the arm and leg, police said. The name of the officer who shot Walker is expected to be released this afternoon.
