Guggenheim opens ‘Pursuit of Pleasure’

With its exhibit "The Pursuit of Pleasure" opening Monday, the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum is indulging in the art of leisure represented in 16th to 20th century artwork.

Joy, delight, bliss, elation, indulgence and amusement are used to describe the 37 pieces organized into four themes: music and dance, celebration and cafe society, flirtation and romance and gaming and sport.

The exhibit includes works by Edgar Degas, Jean-Honore Fragonard, Pablo Picasso, Auguste Rodin and Diego Velazquez.

Paintings are taken from collections at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in New York.

The exhibit was organized by Susan Davidson, curator for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Arkady Ippolitov, curator of Italian prints at the State Hermitage Museum and Karl Schutz, director of paintings gallery at the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

It runs through Jan. 16. Museum hours are 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. For more information, contact the museum at 414-2440.
