Boy wants to repeat camp experience
Friday, July 16, 2004 | 4:08 a.m.
WEEKEND EDITION
July 17 - 18, 2004
"I think I should go to camp because I learned a lot at camp last year," a boy writes. "And I had a lot of fun last year."
He applied to the Sun Summer Camp Fund to help pay for him to return. The fund provides camp scholarships for children whose families cannot afford to send them. The goal is to send every child who qualifies to summer camp.
The fund provided 100 scholarships its first year, in 1970. Last year it collected enough to send 1,000 children to camp.
"The teachers were very cool," the boy continues, "and I want to go and see all my old friends at camp.
"And I think I should go to camp because I would learn a lot of stuff about taking care of myself when I go camping. And I love how we have campfires to get together."
