Kerry not aligned with his church

Thursday, July 15, 2004 | 8:49 a.m.

This is in response to the July 8 letter from John H. Esperian. Mr. Esperian took issue with my July 6 letter stating that because John Kerry condones abortion, the bishops are correct in denying him Holy Communion.

Mr. Esperian may be well-versed in Catholic dogma, but not as well-versed as the bishops who have or will deny Holy Communion to John Kerry.

Mr. Esperian states that when any politician "speaks on issues that conflict with church dogma, he speaks as a public servant and not as a Catholic." The fact remains, however, that Kerry is still a Catholic and has not aligned himself with the church's precepts.

When one knows right from wrong and still allows wrong, he is guilty and should suffer the consequence, which, in Kerry's case, is his being denied the sacrament. On the issue of abortion, when did the Holy Father issue a dispensation?

Mr. Esperian takes issue with my statement, but I stand by it. It is a matter of ethics and integrity.
