Letter: Polarization of politics is sad
Wednesday, July 14, 2004 | 8:50 a.m.
Your July 11 op-ed piece headlined, "Political divide: Presidential race has fueled anger among Americans," was right on. Every day I see how polarized America has become.
Last week my wife and I were out to dinner and we couldn't help but overhear the people at the next table talking to the busboy about the election. They asked him how he was leaning and he said he hadn't made a decision yet. At that the woman said, "It's un-American to be a Democrat."
That's funny, I was under the belief that being able to discuss issues freely, respecting the right of others to see things differently and voting one's conscience is what being an American is all about.
