Letter: Corporations’ greed takes toll on productivity
Thursday, July 8, 2004 | 8:51 a.m.
America has a growing problem that needs to be addressed. Business publications, corporate seminars and the federal government have recently been emphasizing productivity as a top business priority. What increased productivity means is that the same amount of work is being done by fewer workers.
Research shows that this does not mean increased compensation for those workers, but rather, increased corporate profits and executive salaries. The result in this shift in priorities has been a steady erosion of quality. Over the last 10 years it has become increasingly difficult to find quality goods or services. Quality has taken a big hit in the name of productivity, and corporate America seems to find that a desireable state of affairs.
Incompetence rules!
