State looks into new testing firm for schools

Tuesday, July 6, 2004 | 9:34 a.m.

State education officials are meeting this week with vendors interested in replacing Harcourt Education Management as Nevada's school testing contractor.

Following a string of mishaps and mistakes by Harcourt, the Nevada Department of Education began soliciting bids in May.

State Superintendent Keith Rheault said Friday eight companies submitted bids, including Harcourt, which wants to retain its $18 million contract that runs through 2007.

"I know they've (Harcourt) tried to address all of our concerns that led to us opening the bidding process in the first place," Rheault said. " I can also say a company's past history is one of the factors we need to consider."

The existing contract with Harcourt allows the state to terminate the deal with 30 days' notice, Rheault said.

Harcourt was fined $425,000 last year for mistakes made in grading the high school proficiency exam.
