Slaying suspect held without bail

A 37-year-old ex-convict accused of beating a retired Air Force major to death was ordered held without bail this morning.
Justice of the Peace Doug Smith said he believes Raymond Garrett, who faces charges of murder, two counts of battery, five counts of robbery and one count of conspiracy to murder, may be a danger to society.
Garrett was initially arrested on June 11 on charges of robbery, battery and being a felon in possession of a gun. Garrett was released two days later after paying $16,000 bond, even though he was had been charged with felonies in a similar robbery in February and had served 15 years in prison for a 1990 robbery conviction.
Garrett subsequently became wanted for murder after 51-year-old Michael Born died in the hospital.
Police allege Garrett beat and robbed Born in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart store at Stewart Avenue and Nellis Boulevard on June 2 while Born was changing a headlight on his car.
Born, the father of a young daughter, died June 15 at University Medical Center after being on life support for more than two weeks. .
Garrett and his 21-year-old girlfriend, Sabrina Lewis, were arrested June 30. Lewis is charged with a felony count of aiding and abetting a murderer.
