Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman had a busy schedule last week at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Boston. We believe he put his time to good use. Among the resolutions he co-sponsored was one supporting a national registry for siblings in foster care. Goodman was right to bring attention to this issue. Siblings who enter foster care, especially those who enter at young ages, often get separated and lose contact with one another.
Goodman told his fellow mayors that, during the years he spent as a defense attorney, he personally witnessed many children "becoming wards of the state and losing contact with their siblings."
The mayors together voted in support of an official "National Reunion Registry" that would specifically serve people who had lost track of family members as the result of being in foster care. This newspaper has investigated such issues in the past and is aware of the need for such a registry. Support from the country's mayors gives it a better chance of actually being created, and we appreciate Goodman's efforts in bringing about that support.
