Bus stop rapist gets two life sentences

A serial sexual predator nicknamed the "bus stop rapist" because he preyed on women waiting at bus stops throughout Las Vegas was sentenced on Wednesday to two consecutive life sentences for raping five women in 2002.
District Judge Jennifer Togliatti also ordered Xmeiga Gary to pay $10,833 in restitution. Additionally Gary would have to register as a sex offender if ever released from prison and undergo lifelong supervision.
Gary could be released in 20 years as part of a plea agreement he reached with prosecutors, but to be released Gary would have to be paroled twice.
The series of rapes began July 11. The perpetrator was dubbed the "bus stop rapist" because he approached his victims near bus stops and offered them rides.
Prosecutors said two of the rape victims were 14, and the victim of the attempted rape was 17. The other victims were in their 20s.
According to grand jury transcripts, Gary denied sexually assaulting one of the women but said he had consensual sex with the others. He told police the women only cried rape after he reneged on giving them the rides he promised.
In most of the instances, the women and teens had just left work on the late shift at businesses located along Flamingo Road and were waiting for a bus or walking home.
Gary was arrested near a bus stop Aug. 18, 2002, after police spotted him talking to a woman near a bus stop.
