Letter: Freedom depends on one’s income
Friday, Jan. 30, 2004 | 9:35 a.m.
In an Accent section column on Jan. 19, the Sun's Susan Snyder wrote a few paragraphs about liberty and security. Boy, am I sick and tired of hearing about this subject.
All you people out there who have nothing to hide have no fear of losing anything. The rest of you, start worrying.
Speaking of freedom, many years ago I was sitting in my neighborhood bar, feeling a little low. In walks a friend, all jolly and full of life. He sat beside me. "Hi John," he said, "it's great to be alive and live in a country that has so much freedom."
On that statement, I took out my wallet and slammed it on the bar. "Here is your freedom, pal," I said. "When this wallet is empty, my freedom is over. It's back to work Monday to get some more freedom."
We have an election coming in November. It's not all about Republicans or Democrats -- it's about the rich and the poor and, yes, it's about freedom. The rich enjoy more freedom, the middle class less freedom, the poor very little freedom.
