$25 million raised for new Gorman

Friday, Jan. 30, 2004 | 11:33 a.m.

Fund-raising efforts for the new Bishop Gorman High School campus in Summerlin have surpassed the $25 million goal, officials with the campaign said Thursday.

The capital campaign will continue to help defray the cost of constructing the 187,000-square-foot facility off Hualapai Way near Russell Road, a spokeswoman for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas said. The school, which is expected to cost between $35 million and $40 million, is slated to open for the 2007-08 academic year.

The announcement of the success of the fund-raising campaign comes during the celebration of Catholic Schools Week taking place worldwide to recognize teachers, volunteers and students, said Richard Facciolo, superintendent for the Diocese of Las Vegas Department of Education.

"They are the future of Catholic schools here in the valley and Bishop Gorman, with its legacy and tradition and now a new campus, will symbolize the direction we are headed," Facciolo said.

The diocese paid $5.45 million to the Howard Hughes Corp. for the 35-acre lot, Facciolo confirmed.

"It was clearly a priority to (Hughes Corp.) to have our school in their community based on the price and the location we secured," Facciolo said. "We're grateful that we had a good working relationship."

For 50 years Bishop Gorman has been located at Maryland Parkway and Oakey Boulevard. No decision has been made as to the fate of the current campus.
