Letter: Voters should choose wisely

Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004 | 9 a.m.

Do we want to elect the candidate who has accumulated the most campaign funds or the one who will act in the best interests and concerns of the majority of Americans? We must think for ourselves and not rely on campaign slogans, hollow promises or the amount of donations candidates receive from organizations, which will require paybacks in return for their gifts.

Do we want to cater to select groups at the expense of the majority? Do we want the winner to be indebted to those expecting rewards for their so-called generosity? Let's evaluate each slogan, promise, speech, plan, intention and proposal before deciding whether they are valid, realistic, practical, unbiased and satisfactory for all people.

We have all paid the penalty for putting the wrong person in office because we were swayed by the rhetoric, campaign money spent, false promises and a host of other non-genuine factors.

What we need is a strong, honest, trustworthy, capable, and no-nonsense president to lead us back to our respected position in the world. We can do it if we resolve to use our judgment in selecting the right person. We don't want a government that money can buy or we'll regret our choice for years. We need a strong administration that is going to restore prestige and goodwill to our nation and once-again gain respect from the entire world.
