Letter: U.S. should stand up to Israel
Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004 | 9:04 a.m.
In reference to Thomas Friedman's Jan. 20 column: It was heartening to finally hear a highly regarded columnist state in an American newspaper what has been obvious for 36 years.
Since 1967 the United States has lacked the moral courage to stand up to Israel regarding its illegal settlement policy and "land grab." Zionism is a just cause that is being hijacked by an expansionist policy that will lead to its ruin as demographics will make Jews a minority in their own land.
As Friedman states, "American policy today toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is insane." Israel needs our support but when a friend is wrong, America needs to have the courage to say so. We need to say no to illegal Jewish settlements and back our demands with cutoffs of foreign aid.
