The Henderson Police officer who shot and killed a suspected gunman Wednesday during a standoff at Fay Galloway Elementary School has been identified as Mike Gillis of the department's special respose team.
Gillis has been with the department for nine years, a police spokesman said.
Police said Hezekiah E. Lewis, 40, of Henderson gunned down Anthony Jackson, 35, in the parking lot of the school and then ran into the school looking for his ex-girlfriend. Twenty-seven children were in the school at the time. They were not injured.
Lewis was shot and killed by Gillis during a standoff with police several hours later.
Gillis has been placed on routine paid leave while the department investigates the shooting. A Clark County coroner's inquest jury will determine whether the shooting was justified. The inquest has not yet been scheduled.
