Letter: Bush’s policies have been bad
Monday, Jan. 26, 2004 | 8:49 a.m.
Sept. 11 was a terrible event, and it started our war on terrorism. We were shunted away from this action by the Bush adminstration telling us and the world that Saddam was an evil guy (true), that he had weapons of mass destruction (we're still looking for them a year later) and that he had ties to terrorist groups (Colin Powell has just admitted that no ties between Saddam and al-Qaida have been found).
Our military is in a quaqmire in Iraq, with no end in sight. More than 500 have been killed since the fighting ended, and to keep up our troop levels, reservists, most of them married with children, are being called up in increasing numbers. If George W. is re-elected a draft will be necessary.
President Reagan's "Star Wars" missile defense system is being pushed by Bush, even though no nation would dare hurl a missile at us and that our real threat is terrorists. His latest is the lunar station as a platform to send man to Mars. Does the Bush administration realize the thousands of tons of material that would be needed to complete his goal of man living on the moon or Mars? How would they get that up there?
His huge tax cuts have crippled our country financially. When President Clinton left office there was talk about paying off our debt, but now the tax cuts have plunged us into a $7 trillion debt, with deficits as far as the eye can see.
I don't think we can stand four more years of Bush's "leadership."
