Truss collapse causes $5,000 in damage

Friday, Jan. 23, 2004 | 11:19 a.m.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority confirmed that a truss, or tower, meant to suspend tracking lights and display signs 167-feet above the convention floor collapsed while the International Builders Show was being set up at the Las Vegas Convention Center late last week.

No one was hurt when the Andersen Windows exhibit crashed to the central floor hall about 2 a.m. Friday morning, convention officials said.

This is the first time such an accident has occurred while setting up a show at the Las Vegas Convention Center, LVCVA spokeswoman Marina Nicola said. The convention center will have to repair "nominal" damage to an air wall track, she said. An air walk track is the track a moving wall runs in, similar to a closet track but larger.

Cost of repairs is estimated at $5,000.

The exhibit was being set up by Staging Solutions, Wayne Stetson, senior vice president for the International Builders Show, said.

LVCVA and IBS officials said they do not know what caused the accident. Stetson said Andersen Windows product was not damaged, but the company had to ship in new trusses and graphics before the show opened.
