Police shoot, kill home-invasion suspect
Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004 | 11:21 a.m.
A Metro Police officer shot and killed a home-invasion robbery suspect who allegedly pointed a gun at the officer while running from him in the area of Rainbow Boulevard and Washington Avenue.
Deputy Chief Greg McCurdy said the dead man was one of three people who had burst into a home in the 4100 block of North Durango Drive, near Craig Road, about 10:30 p.m.
The armed suspects tied up the victims during the robbery. After the robbers ran from the house, the victims untied themselves and called police.
Patrol officers and gang crime officers spotted the suspects' vehicle moments later and began chasing it, McCurdy said. In the 1200 block of Silver Prospect Drive, near Washington and Rainbow, about seven miles from the robbery, the car stopped and one of the passengers surrendered immediately, but the other two men ran, police said. The driver was chased down by police.
As the third suspect ran from police, he allegedly pointed a handgun at one of the officers. The officer fired, hitting him, McCurdy said. The suspect kept running for a short distance before collapsing in a back yard.
Inside the car, detectives found "substantial evidence" related to the home-invasion robbery, McCurdy said. Robbery detectives are working to see if the three suspects have committed other home invasions.
The two men who were arrested are Dewan Blackburn, 24, and Bruce Bolden, 23, both of Las Vegas, police said. They will be charged with murder since a death resulted during the commission of a felony, McCurdy said.
They were also charged with multiple counts of robbery with a deadly weapon, kidnapping and home invasion. They are being held at the Clark County Detention Center.
The Clark County coroner's office has not yet released the name of the man killed by police.
